Behind the baseline: why women's tennis still struggles to put women in the coach's chair
Tennis sells itself on gender parity. The numbers in its coaching ranks tell a different story — and the women trying to change that say the obstacles are cultural, not structural.
On the morning of 23 June 2026, the BBC published a long-form feature asking a question that the professional game has been quietly failing to answer for two decades. Tennis, the broadcast notes, "prides itself on gender equality" — yet the population of full-time female coaches at elite level remains thin enough that the BBC's own interview list reads like a roll-call of pioneers rather than a working profession. The piece, headlined "Battling egos and stereotypes — the rise of female tennis coaches," frames the shortage not as a pipeline problem but as a cultural one: a sport where men have grown accustomed to being coached by men, and where the women who break through describe a fight against expectation more than a fight for qualifications.
The contradiction is real, and it is not new. Equal prize money has been settled law at the four grand slams since 2007; the women's tour is a billion-dollar broadcast property; Billie Jean King's advocacy generation is now the establishment. None of that has produced proportional representation in the coaching box. What it has produced is a small, identifiable group of women — the BBC names several — who describe the same obstacles in roughly the same words: scepticism from agents, scepticism from parents of junior players, and the peculiar tennis-specific problem of being told, sometimes politely, sometimes not, that a male coach is what a serious player requires. Why tennis specifically
Tennis is an individual sport with an unusually intimate coaching relationship. Unlike football or basketball, where a head coach commands a staff and a system, a tennis coach works one-on-one, often for years, and is hired on judgment as much as on résumé. That intimacy cuts two ways. It gives a talented female coach a clearer path to a top job than she would have in a hierarchical team sport — and it gives the player, parent, or agent a clearer canvas onto which to project assumptions about who that coach should be.
The BBC feature leans on this dynamic. The women it speaks to argue that the resistance is rarely explicit. That is the harder form of bias to litigate, because each individual decision can be defended as a personal choice. The counter-reading
There is a version of this story in which the gap is not bias but supply. Coaching at tour level is a punishing, low-status, frequently seasonal occupation with limited financial upside; fewer women than men may be willing to absorb those terms, particularly in the years when they might otherwise be starting families. The BBC does not engage with this argument head-on, and the women it quotes tend to dismiss it. But it is the explanation that has historically been offered by federation officials, and it is not entirely without evidence: the dropout rate from coaching among both genders is high, and the working conditions are poor.
What neither side can show, because the data is not collected, is whether women leave the profession at higher rates than men once they enter it, or whether fewer enter in the first place. Until the WTA or the ITF commits to publishing that breakdown, the gap will continue to be debated in interviews rather than settled in numbers.
What it would take to move the line
The BBC's piece closes on practical interventions rather than aspirations. The women profiled point to three: financial support for female coaches during the early, uncredentialed years of their careers; visible role models at the top of the game, which the tour is beginning to produce; and a willingness among agents and federations to hire on merit and defend the hire publicly when it is questioned. None of these is a structural transformation. All of them are within the existing architecture of the sport, which is part of why the gap has persisted — there is no obstacle to action that is not, in some sense, a choice.
The honest summary is that tennis knows what its coaching ranks look like, knows roughly why, and has not yet treated the imbalance as urgent in the way it treated prize money two decades ago. The BBC's reporting makes that gap visible without overclaiming to have closed it.
