What is harder to verify — and what matters more for understanding the regional signal — is the seven-million figure, the meaning of the Karbala setting, and the political vacuum the ceremony is intended to fill. Reporting from the Iranian state-aligned channels that carried the live coverage describes a procession on a scale rarely attempted in modern Iraqi public life. According to a 19:18 UTC relay from the Khamenei_it Telegram channel, citing Al Mayadeen, the governorate of Karbala announced that seven million participants attended the funeral. Press TV's live broadcast, anchored by correspondent Nawar Faeq beginning around 18:55 UTC, showed dense crowds awaiting the start of the procession, with the broadcaster characterising the atmosphere as one of mass religious mourning. Footage distributed via the Khamenei_en channel at 19:03 UTC showed crowds surrounding the vehicle carrying the body as it moved through the city. Earlier dispatches at 17:40 and 18:26 UTC described mourners gathering at the entrance to Karbala to receive the cortege as it arrived.
The structure of the coverage is itself worth noting. The reporting is monolingual in its sourcing: Telegram channels affiliated with the Iranian Leader's office, Press TV, and Al Mayadeen — a Beirut-based outlet long aligned with the Iran-led axis — form a closed circuit. The seven-million figure: what the sources do and do not establish
Karbala's urban population is on the order of 700,000; the governorate as a whole counts in the low millions. Two readings are plausible. The first is that the figure is a sincere upper-bound estimate produced by Karbala's authorities under conditions in which counting is impossible and the political incentive is to maximise the number.
