FIFA's president confirmed on 12 July 2026 that a 64-team men's World Cup will be 'looked at' after the current tournament, putting expansion back on the table while 2026's expanded 48-team edition is still being played.

*This Monexus desk note: wire coverage on 12 July 2026 led with the headline fact (the 64-team study) and treated the procedural timeline as a footnote. This piece inverts the weighting: the timeline is the news, because it tells you how seriously FIFA is taking its own proposal while the 48-team edition is still running.
