Iran strikes US bases in Kuwait and Bahrain as IRGC claims 18 targets hit in opening salvo

The IRGC says it struck 18 targets across three Gulf air bases in two waves, with the Iranian Army separately claiming drone hits on the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain. The claims originate entirely with Iranian state-aligned channels and have not been independently verified.
/ @presstv · Telegram

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the regular Iranian Army each claimed overnight strikes against US military infrastructure in Kuwait and Bahrain, according to statements carried by Iranian state-aligned Telegram channels in the early hours of 11 June 2026. The reports, which originated in a narrow set of Iranian outlets and were not yet corroborated by US Central Command, the Pentagon, or Gulf-state authorities at the time of writing, describe a coordinated opening salvo that, if the damage claims hold up, would represent a major direct Iranian strike on American forward-deployed positions on the Arabian Peninsula.

The claims are real; the operational picture is not. The next 24 hours will determine whether Tehran is signalling resolve, demonstrating capability, or — as several analysts have suggested in the past when Iranian outlets have led with battlefield claims — running an information operation that gets ahead of the facts. All of the claims below come from the Iranian side of the wire.

What was claimed, and by whom

At 00:12 UTC on 11 June 2026, the Telegram channel @wfwitness, citing Iran's Mehr News agency, said the IRGC Aerospace Force had "carried out the first phase of its offensive missile and drone operations," adding that "the dispersion of launch origins and the comprehensiveness of the target bank" signalled a broad strike plan. The post did not enumerate targets at that stage.

Six minutes later, at 00:18 UTC, @GeoPWatch carried a fuller IRGC statement asserting that "the brave fighters of the Aerospace Force and the heroes of the IRGC Navy at dawn today" had struck "the aggressor" in retaliation for a prior attack the statement attributed to "the child-killing" — language consistent with Iranian state framing of US-Israeli operations. The same statement named Kuwait and Bahrain as the geographic theatre.

At 00:23 UTC, @wfwitness posted a separate claim attributed to the Iranian Army saying it had carried out drone attacks on the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain, naming "communication antennas and Patriot radar facilities" as among the targets. That claim is institutionally distinct from the IRGC statement — the Iranian Army and the IRGC are separate chains of command, and joint public statements of this kind are rare.

At 00:31 UTC, Press TV's Telegram channel (@presstv) carried the most specific IRGC claim of the night: that the IRGC Aerospace Force and Navy had executed "two waves of operations, striking and destroying 18 key US military targets" across three named installations — Al-Salem Air Base, Ahmed Al-Jaber Air Base, and Sheikh Isa Air Base. Press TV is Iranian state television's English-language service and operates as an official outlet of the Islamic Republic.

Why the source pattern matters

Every claim currently on the wire traces back to Iranian state-aligned channels: Press TV (state broadcaster), Mehr News (state-affiliated), the IRGC's own statements, and Telegram aggregators that lift directly from those feeds. The Pentagon, US Central Command (CENTCOM), the Kuwaiti and Bahraini governments, and the US Fifth Fleet had not posted corroborating statements as of the time of writing. Reuters, the Associated Press, the BBC, and Al Jazeera had not published independent confirmation of the strike claims in the immediate aftermath of the Telegram posts.

That is not unusual as a first cycle. Iranian outlets often publish first on Iranian operations, and Western wire confirmation typically arrives in the following hours as satellite imagery, regional air-traffic data, and on-the-ground reporting catch up. But it means the 18-target figure, the two-wave framing, the Al-Salem / Ahmed Al-Jaber / Sheikh Isa target list, and the drone strike on the Fifth Fleet should each be treated as Iranian-asserted, not independently verified, until matched from the other side.

The geography of the claimed strikes

The three bases named in the IRGC statement are all well-known US forward installations on the Arabian Peninsula:

  • Ali Al Salem Air Base, in Kuwait, hosts US Air Force units and has been a staging point for air operations in the Gulf region for decades.
  • Ahmed Al-Jaber Air Base, also in Kuwait, has hosted US and coalition air assets, including fighter and tanker aircraft.
  • Sheikh Isa Air Base, in Bahrain, is a Royal Bahraini Air Force facility that has hosted US Navy and Marine Corps aviation; the broader Naval Support Activity Bahrain complex, located in Manama, is the home port of the US Fifth Fleet.

The Iranian Army's separate claim of strikes on the Fifth Fleet, if accurate, would directly target the operational headquarters of the US Navy's largest forward-deployed naval formation. The Fifth Fleet covers the Persian Gulf, the Red Sea, the Arabian Sea, and parts of the Indian Ocean.

The pattern of the Iranian claim — dispersed launch sites, multiple bases, two services (the IRGC Aerospace Force and the IRGC Navy) striking in coordination — is consistent with a pre-planned operation rather than a retaliatory tit-for-tat. The framing in the IRGC statement, which frames the strikes as punishment for an earlier attack using loaded language ("the child-killing"), is the language of a state that has decided the rhetorical line has already been crossed.

What we verified, and what we could not

This publication treats the 11 June claims as Iranian state-asserted until the record is matched.

What we have on the record:

  • A statement attributed to the IRGC Aerospace Force and IRGC Navy, naming Al-Salem, Ahmed Al-Jaber, and Sheikh Isa air bases, and asserting 18 targets destroyed across two waves. (Source: Press TV Telegram channel.)
  • A statement attributed to the IRGC framing the strikes as retaliation for a prior attack on Iranian soil. (Source: GeoPWatch Telegram channel.)
  • A separate claim attributed to the Iranian Army that it carried out drone strikes on the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain, naming communications antennas and Patriot radar facilities. (Source: @wfwitness Telegram channel citing Iranian Army.)
  • A Mehr News report, via @wfwitness, that the IRGC Aerospace Force had launched the first phase of "offensive missile and drone operations."

What we could not verify from the available wire:

  • Independent confirmation from the US Department of Defense, CENTCOM, or the US Fifth Fleet.
  • Confirmation from the governments of Kuwait or Bahrain, both of whom host the named installations and would be expected to comment on strikes inside their territory.
  • Casualty figures, on either side.
  • Damage assessments, satellite imagery, or commercial flight-tracking data consistent with a large-scale strike operation across three Gulf air bases.
  • The specific prior attack the IRGC statement frames as the casus belli for the retaliation. The statements use the phrase "the child-killing" and refer to an "aggressor" attack, but the available wire does not name a triggering event on 10 June or earlier in the same day.

Any subsequent reporting that asserts the 18-target figure, the named bases, or the Fifth Fleet strikes as established fact before these gaps are closed will be running ahead of the evidence.

The structural read

Whether or not the operational claims hold up, the information operation is itself a fact. The decision to publish detailed target lists, base names, and a two-wave framing through state-aligned channels in the first hour of the operation is consistent with an Iranian strategy that treats the strike as much a media event as a military one. In the contemporary Middle East, the first cycle of reporting is part of the strike's effects: oil markets, Gulf-state governments, and US domestic political audiences all read the Telegram posts in real time, and the framing they encounter first tends to set the terms of the next day's coverage.

If the strikes are confirmed, the structural question becomes how a US administration responds to a direct Iranian attack on three named bases hosting American forces — particularly one carried out in the territory of two Gulf Arab states that are not co-belligerents. If the strikes are not confirmed at the level claimed, the question becomes what Tehran hoped to achieve with the messaging, and whether it was aimed at a domestic Iranian audience, a regional one, or Washington.

Either way, the gap between an Iranian-asserted strike and a Western-confirmed one is the story to watch over the next 24 hours.

This article will be updated as US, Kuwaiti, and Bahraini statements become available.

Desk note: Monexus is leading with Iranian state-aligned sources because they are the only sources currently on the wire. We have not adopted the Iranian framing ("punishment of the aggressor," "child-killing") as our own voice. Where US or Gulf-state sources post confirmation or rebuttal, the article will be updated to reflect what is verified on both sides.
